Hi! I did not want to let more time go by without publishing the tutorial of these Knitted Baby Booties that match the Baby Knitted Onesie.
Probably, if you have never knitted baby booties you will think that it must be complicated being so tiny and with so many curves and shapes, but that’s not true! They are very simple to knit, you will only need to know how to cast on and bind off stitches, knit garter stitch and make decreases.
In 1 hour you will have both finished and you will be so impressed of what you have made that you’ll want to knit more and more!
Materials to make a pair of Knitted Baby Booties
The needed materials to make our Easy knitted booties are:
- 1 ball of 50 grams of yarn for 4mm needles. As I used in the post of Knitted Baby Onesie, to make the booties match, I used the same yarn, the color is 15-light greyish green-of Drops Merino Extra Fine Uní Colour.
- 4 mm needles
- 2 wood buttons
- Tapestry needle
How to knit a pair of Knitted Baby Booties
1. Knit the ankle section of the baby knitted booties
First, we must cast on 27 (30, 32) stitches and knit 16 rows in garter stitch, this will make up the ankle part of our wool booties. Keep in mind that at this point, the length can be varied to your liking, if you prefer that the bootie fits higher at the foot or that it is wider you can knit more rows.
2. Knit the toecap section of the knitted booties
From this point, we will begin to knit the toecap of the handmade baby booties working with the 7 middle stitches in the smallest size and with 8 middle stitches in the two larger sizes. Once we have knitted 17 (19, 20) stitches to access the middle section of the work, we will have to knit 12 (14, 16) rows only using these middle stitches. This will be the upper area of the toecap.
As you can see, if you have been knitting by slipping the first stitch of each row, in each side of this middle section, which we have just knitted, “little bumps” have been formed by which we should insert the needle and pick up 7 (8,9) stitches.
Now we must pick up the 7 (8,9) stitches from the other side of the toe…
To finish the toecap section of our knitted booties, we must knit all the 41 (46, 50) stitches for 6 rows, this will be what gives the height to the toe of the bootie.
At this point we see that it is already taking some form and you can already differentiate the toecap perfectly. This is when we begin to really motivate ourselves!
3. Knit the sole of the Knitted Baby Booties
To continue, we must return to the middle section of the work to work again only with the middle 7 (8,8) stitches in short rows, for this, we knit 24 (27, 29) stitches and turn the work, such and how we would do when finishing a row.
We knit 6 (7, 7) stitches so that we only have one stitch left to knit, which we will knit together will the stitch next to it in the left. This way we will be able to close the sides.
In this way, we will continue to knit 6 (7, 7), 2 stitches together and turning the work.
It will be very easy to distinguish when you must knit two stitches together, since there will be a small separation between stitches, these are the two stitches that are slightly separated which you should knit together to decrease the work and go on forming the sole of the knitted booties.
If you want to give a bit of rounded shape to the heel part in the sole, we will have to decrease two stitches. When we have 15 (18,18) stitches left, we must knit 3 stitches, knit two stitches together (decrease), knit 2 stitches and knit 2 stitches together. In this way, instead of continuing to work with the 7 (8,8) middle stitches, now we will have 5 (6,6,).
When only 9 (12,12) stitches remain on the needle, it will be time to bind off all of them.
To make this seam without a notice you will find very helpful the little bumps that have formed thanks to slipping the first stitch. You should start seaming by passing the tapestry needle through a little bump on one side and the other side alternately until you have both parts completely joined. You will see that you hardly notice that there is a seam!
To finish, we turn our booties, roll the top and sew on a decorative button and they are ready! You can see how easy it is to knit these baby booties!
As you can see this is a very simple and basic pattern that lends itself to all the modifications that you want. You can put a band to tie it to the ankle, make the top longer by knitting a few more rows, put a decorative eight on the toecap, mix stockinette with garter stitch and everything you can think of to make them match your knitting projects.
As I mentioned above, these knitted baby booties are made to match the Knitted Baby Onesie, of which you have the pattern and tutorial available on the blog.
I recommend that if you have some yarn and needles by hand, try to make these knitted baby booties even if you have only knitted scarves and cowls, they are made in no time and I am convinced that you will be surprised with the result!.

Thanks for the sweet pattern and the very helpful photos. Unfortunately, as a beginner, I’m confused about how I can pick up 7 stitches after 12 rows of the center section…I see 6 “bumps” not 7. :/ Appreciate any help on this! 🙂
Me pasa lo mismo ,con la suela no me queda bien ,lo hice tres veces y no lo consigo .El modelo es precioso.
Hi Marta…I searched the entire internet for a suitable pair of bootees/shoes for my autistic daughter’s Madame Alexander 18 inch playdoll. Your pattern takes top honours. I used 2mm needles and 4 ply cotton. Thank you so much.
Le spiegazioni sono molto chiare. Grazie
Love this pattern, but would love to see a video please.
I’ve picked up the stitches on both sides . I have that bump in the middle. I’m stuck.
Is there an easy printable pattern. Thanks
I can’t locate the sizes. I see 3 numbers listed but not sizes help this is a beautiful pattern
Okay, I finally managed to make them but the heel on the seaming sticks way out.
I noticed this as well – I’m wondering if you just K2tog for the entire last row or two if that would make it stick out less. I may try that on the next one I make.
Is there video instruction
I love this pattern Thank you for sharing it One question – are you slipping purlwise?
Thank you.

Hello Marta, i have inly just registered because I saw your beautiful pattern for the baby onesie which I am going to make for my first Great Grandchild due at the beginning of July. I would like to make it for a 3-6 month size. You mention in the pattern that you show how to change the pattern to make it for a larger size. However, I am unable to find where you show this. Please can you help? In closing, I have to say how wonderful your tutorials are, you don’t leave anything to guess work. You show everything to be done and I thank you so very much for this.
It’s so amazing and beautiful. It’s So attractive And Useful. When I see This I Feel Happy Because It’s so creative and useful. These ideas Are Very Impressive thanks for helpful ideas I am very very happy to see this because you give me creative ideas.
I really struggle with knitting, but this pattern is PERFECT! I know some had trouble following the end of the sole rows, but if you follow the k3, k2tog, k2, k2tog and count the remaining unknit stitches on both needles, it works out perfectly – you will end up with 9 stitches all on one needle! Then it’s cast off and done, so fun and satisfying. Thank you SO much for this wonderful pattern!
Hello! These are so cute and I enjoyed knitting them. The only thing that confuses me is the bind off. If you have 12 stitches remaining (middle size) you have 3 stitches not knitted. Do you knit these then bind off the whole row?
Not sure if you ever figured this out, but what I did is on the last row I think I did K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog and then knitted the remainder of the row. That got me from the 8 middle stitches down to the 6 stitches that it’s supposed to be at the end.
Thank you so much! This is so fast and easy! It was a tad hard to understand sometimes but I winged it and they turned out great!
Is it 16 rows as your pic only shows 8? I have knitted 16 rows but it looks like it may be too big-maybe you should have shown 16 rows in your pic instead of 8?
Thanks.
Hi Moira!
You are counting ridges. Each “ridge” is actually two rows of knitting. So, for example, in the first image, there are 8 ridges, which are 16 rows of knitting.
Hope this helps!
Thank you Marta-that makes sense-in England we call a row a knitted row. Got a bit confusing at the end with knitting in middle but managed to understand and the bootees are a nice style-I understand it is difficult in another language.
Thank you so much for posting this and your quick reply.
Warm Wishes from
Moira xxx
Can I see the video of this pattern for my personal use as I am beginner , I can’t understand it if u send the video , it will be helpful to me Thank u , I am from India ,
Did she send a video?
yay! I made them. I’m a real beginner and thought Id never finish it, I’m so pleased with myself. I’m going to make hundreds of them now hahahaha
Okay, best I could do…looked at translating spanish and looks like you K1, K2 pass first st. over (dec. 1stitch) K1 K2 tog. K2 tog. This row only. This makes your 7 sts. into 5, then continue as before until 9 sts. remain. I didnt get them all on one needle but passed two sts over and cast off seems to work okay. Hope this helps. Happy knitting!
Anyone come up with the answer to k3 k2tog k2 k2tog yet have tried several different ways but does not come out right. Love this site pictures and patterns fab just the odd thing lost in translation maybe. Hope there are new patterns on the way! X
But that decreases 3 stitches!!! This part of pattern-crucial as it shapes the foot-is wrong, would be nice if it was explained correctly. Very confusing for beginners-please help marta!!!
i really loved these bootee pattern, but struggled with the last bit I’m afraid. k3, k2tog, k2, k2tog. I have redone this so many times but it just doesn’t work. Everything else is perfect, and I love the illustrations. I just can’t finish them as I’m not that competent.
I have done it this way:Knit 1, then knit 2 more, pass 1st stitch over to decr by 1, then knit 1, knit 2 together and knit 2 more together, leaving 5 stitches to finish
Loved knitting the booties, baby due in the family and have finished and they so cute and sweet. Pattern was really clear and loved the illustrations that give you extra confidence you are doing it right for a beginner like me. Will try the hat next! Might even try the PInk Lady cardigan now I have got going. Thanks.
Hi Helen!
Thank you very much for your feedback! This means a to to me!
Hello, would you be able to answer this question for me? I have the same problem and I see it has not been answered in the thread below.
How many rows do I need to do to complete the sole?
I’ve done knit 6 and 2 together then turned.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Keep going till 18 stitches remain on needle.
Love the accompanying photos!
To what ages to the three sizes correspond? Thanks!!!
Deb
Hi Deb!
Sizes 0-1 month, 1-3 months and 3-6 months
Can you use the pattern for adult sizes and how many stitches
How many rows do I continue to knit the sole? I got lost on the rounding the heal part in step three. Sorry new to knitting and can’t follow that last part
I had the same problem. Confused by knit 3 kn 2 st together. Do i turn wk 1st or continue with knit 2 kn 2 st together?
I too don’t understand the final section of the sole. It doesn’t make sense to bind off as my working yarn is in the middle of the row? Please can you assist?
Hi, I can see there are three sizes that can be made but cannot see which age groups they are for.
Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks
Also, I love your instructions and how you have explained the pattern and given pictures for instructions! Makes it very easy to follow, thankyou
Love this pattern! Very easy and fast to knit up a pair, would love a pair of matching mittens and hat, do you have any? thankyou so much
Lovely pattern for me, a beginner , my daughter loves them and wants to know if she can have a pair, she’s 40 yrs old and a size 5 shoe. Can this pattern be adjusted to the grown up size Please xxx 😁
Hi Sue! Sure you can! But I fear that in a bigger size they won’t be as cute…
I know but but my daughter would love a pair, but I have no idea how to enlarge the pattern xx
I used a size 7 needle
It looks like fit for a three year old and place. 1/2 inch elastic
Across middle to hold the foot in place
I used. Caron simply soft tweed. 5oz. / 141 g
I am new to knitting and knit left handed. What changes in the instructions would I have to make to be successful in making these adorable booties?
Appreciate your help, thank you,
