Hello Creative! If there is one thing we knitters have to deal with, it’s those leftover yarn balls that we leave behind every time we finish a project. Anyone’s dream is that when you finish knitting, you have so little leftover that it’s not even worth saving, but the reality is that, most of the time, we accumulate waste yarn without knowing what we will do with them.

The project I’m proposing today came from the need to use all the mohair I had after knitting the CANDY CLOUD Sweater. Those little balls couldn’t stay in a box!

Materials for knitting the SUGAR Mohair Shawl

  • Mohair leftovers. As I mentioned before, to make this project I used the leftover mohair from knitting the Candy Cloud Sweater, which is Knitive’s Gloss Mohair. Colors Blue Steel, Romantic Blue, Candy Pink, Stone Beige and Snow White.
  • 1 ball of 100 gr. (=400 meters) of Knitive Meriwash in Pearl White.
  • 5 mm. circular knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle

This project is knitted flat in back and forth rows. You can use your straight needles to knit it, but I recommend the use of circular needles, so you can fit all your stitches along the cable without any space problems.

Knitting stitches, techniques and abbreviations

To knit the SUGAR mohair shawl, you will only need to know some very basic techniques and stitches, making it a perfect project for all levels. More advanced knitters will enjoy knitting a garment without having to pay too much attention as they knit and let themselves go, and knitters who are just starting out or want to take their knitting a step further will learn how to shape garments using simple decreases and increases.

  • Cast on
  • Knit stitch (k)
  • Yarn over (yo)
  • Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog)
  • Bind off

How to knit the SUGAR Mohair Shawl

The SUGAR knitted shawl is started at one of the corners, and the project will grow diagonally (with the help of increases and decreases) until we bind off the stitches on the lower right side of the triangle.

The shawl is worked entirely in GARTER stitch and the design is made up of 4 rows that are repeated until the end.

You can print out the following diagram to see the layout of the stitches and have it at your side while knitting, although once you have knitted the first few rows, you will have memorized the diagram, and you will be able to do it without the need to follow the pattern.

The first three rows are for preparation and from row 4 onwards we will begin the repetitions:

Row 1. Cast on 3 stitches

Rows 2. Knit all the stitches

Row 3 (right side): k1, YO, k1, YO, k1 (5 sts.)

Row 4 (wrong side): Knit all the stitches

Row 5 (right side): k2tog, knit until you have only 1 stitch left, YO, k1.

Row 6 (wrong side): Knit all the stitches

Row 7 (right side): knit until you have only 2 stitches left, YO, k1, YO, k1.

Repeat rows 4 -7 until the desired length is achieved (make sure you have enough yarn to bind off all the stitches).

The width of each stripe is entirely random. In my case, I knitted each color until I finished the mohair ball. The only one I knitted without spending the white mmohair ball was the first stripe, which I reserved a bit to knit the last stripe and give some unity to the shawl.

As you can tell, this is a two-needle knitted shawl pattern with an asymmetrical shape that is very easy to make and wear. You can use any material and, as it is knitted from one corner to one full side, you decide the size and when you stop knitting and bind off the stitches.

The beauty of this project is the color combination you choose, and personally, the fact that it allowed me to make use of leftover mohair after knitting my favourite sweater got me thrilled 😍.

If you liked this project and it inspired you, comment and share! And remember, if you dare to knit your own version, you can share the result on social media using the hashtag #SugarShawl and #creativaatelier, so we can all admire the result.

Kisses!

Hi, i am about to finish my shawl. I would like to know the measurements of the shawl, to have an idea if I’m on the right track.

Hi Gladys, the measurements of the shawl can vary based on several factors. These primarily include the yarn used, the size of the needles, and your individual tension while knitting. In the case of the Sugar shawl, which is knitted diagonally, the final size of the shawl will also depend on the number of rows knitted. Knitting fewer rows might result in a scarf, while knitting more rows could produce a larger shawl.

The ultimate size of the shawl in this case will be determined by your personal preference and style, since you are the one who decides the result by working more or less rows. 😉
