Today I want to share with you a pattern and tutorial to knit a beautiful Baby Jacket crossed in front, perfect for the coldest days of winter.

The style and idea has been taken from the “Ribbed Baby Jacket” originally published on the online by Raverly, although I have done it my way by modifying the number of stiches for each size, the shape of the sleeves, how it was knitted ( since the original pattern was knitted in the round) and the front and neck so that the jacket is crossed to give it a more modern look.

Required Knitting stitches and techniques 

To knit this baby jacket it is only necessary to have basic knowledge of knitting, nothing that cannot be learned by watching YouTube videos. Here I leave you a selection of videos in which you can learn the stitches and techniques used:

Materials to make a Knitted Baby Jacket

In the images below you will find the number of stitches that you need to make the baby jacket for size 12 months using  6mm needles (10 US, 4 UK) and three balls of 100 gr. of Bulky yarn , if you want to use a thinner or thicker yarn, as well as needles of different sizes you will have to increase or decrease the number of stitches according to the desired measurements. In the same way, you will have the instructions to make the knitted baby jacket for sizes 6 months, 3 months and 1 month, you will find the number of stitches needed in the images in parentheses and in this order.

Gauge

10 x 10 cm = 13 stitches – 18 rows (Stockinette Stitch)

You must consider when picking up the stiches for the neck and front, that being a rib stitch pattern if we pick up one stitch per stitch the fabric will be shrunk. To avoid this we must pick up two stiches per stitch, one stitch per stitch twice, two stiches per stitch, one stitch per stitch twice, etc… if you still think that is shrunk for your taste, try picking up two stitches per stitch and one stitch per stitch. Here there are no rules as it will depend on your personal taste and the way you pick up stitches.

You can make these cords using a crochet hook, by crocheting a chain, or make it as shown in the photo, with your fingers following this video tutorial.

It is a very easy baby jacket to knit and suitable for all levels (even for the level “I have no idea, but I want to try”) since the stitches I have used are quite basic and simple. I must also say that due to the thickness of the yarn is very rewarding to work, since every row you see how the fabric grows and the baby jacket progresses, which encourages us to keep knitting, especially those like me, who like to see results fast … you will make it in a jiffy!

I love this tone of blue for children combined with the wood of the buttons, it can be used for any look! And I am convinced that we are going to give it a lot of use this season, especially on the coldest months (it goes without saying that it is super warm). And if the garment was for a girl, my choice would undoubtedly have been a pale pink… call me traditional! 😜

    Hi. I am doing the first bit of the Crossed Baby Jacket. After the cast on row I did 15 rows in stockinnette.
    The cast on row is now curling as it goes to stockinnete but the photos of the cardigan don’t show that this is a problem…
    How did you avoid this?

    Merci pour ce modèle qui grâce aux photos serait très facile à réaliser si l’échantillon pour 10cm ou les mesures étaient indiqués. Il va me falloir dessiner mon patron et faire quelques petits calculs en fonction de la laine que je vis utiliser. Le modèle est très esthétique et je vous remercie de l’avoir mis en ligne.

    Hi . . this looks like a beautiful sweater. I found the link on All Free Knitting. I, too, am a little confused. I can follow a specific pattern in print. I have a difficult time with the pictures for some reason. AFK labeled this project as “easy” but I think it’s more an intermediate level with mostly descriptions of the pictures. Also, the directions are given for one sleeve, there is no explanation for where to start the other sleeve, etc. and I can’t tell if there should be additional instructions for the ribbed cuff or if it’s just the sleeve turned up.

    yarn number 6 means nothing to an Australian. Can you please tell me what Ply wool was used. Looks fairly thick. I am guessing 12 ply.

      The instructions for the smaller sizes are in ( ) under the number of cast on stitches. Example: cast on 40
      (35, 30, 25)

    think this is a beautiful sweater and I will make for my first great grandson for the fall. I wonder if you have the moral knitting instructions telling me line by line. Stupid I am and find it easy. Is there something I should be pushing? I dontthinkI ever saw this sweater before so therefore never mentioned this.
