As I have said on some other occasions, a while ago I decided to make versions of my knitting patterns to crochet and vice versa. So that, it doesn’t matter what technique you feel most comfortable with, if you like a model, you can enjoy the pattern and the finished garment.
So far, some versions have already come to light, such as the Rainbow Romper (crochet version and knitted version) and the Watermelon Romper (crochet version and knitted version). Naturally, one of the models you liked the most had to be part of this list: The NUR Knitted Kimono, in its crochet version, which I have called NEO Crochet Baby Kimono.
Materials
The cotton I have used to crochet this baby jacket are the same I used to knit the NUR Knitted Kimono (its two-needle version). You can easily replace them with any fiber, either wool or cotton, indicated for 4 mm needles, you just have to keep in mind that your tension sample of 14 stitches x 16 rows (single crochet) should measure 10×10 cm.
- 3 skeins of 50 gr. from Katia Alabama in color 48-Pink
- 5mm crochet hook

- 30 cm. of matching cord or ribbon

How to make a Crochet Baby Kimono – Size 1-3 months
1. Crochet the left front side
Chain 33 stitches. Turn your work and from the second chain from the hook, work 32 single crochet. Continue crocheting through Back Loops only for 14 rows. Every time you finish a row, you should turn the work and chain one.
For back loop crochet, insert your hook through the back loop only and complete the stitch as you normally would.
As you can see in the image, I indicate 15 rows, that is, one row of single crochet + 14 rows TBL (Single Crochet through Back Loops only).

Decrease to form the left neckline
We will begin to shape the V-shaped neckline of our crochet jacket. To do so, you must decrease 1 stitch on each row when you reach this area until you end up with 21 stitches.
Increase for the first sleeve…
Once you have 21 stitches on the front piece, chain 28 stitches, turn your work and work 27 sc on the chain, 19 BLSC, 1 decrease.
Work 9 more rows making a decrease in the neckline area on each row until you get 38 stitches.
Work these 38 stitches for 5 more rows and cut the strand.
Reserve this piece for later, we will continue working on it once the front Bobble Stitch piece is finished.
2. Crochet the right front piece with Bobbles
We will start this front Bobbles piece in the same way as the previous one: chain 33 stitches and work 32 scTBL for 3 rows.
From here, we will begin to alternate Central Single Crochet (CSC) with Bobble Stitch. But before starting to crochet CSC, it is VERY IMPORTANT that we decrease some stitches, since this type of stitch, when crocheted in the center of each stitch, behaves differently and is more stretched out.
Work the transition row between stitches as follows: 1 chain, 5 scTBL, decrease, 5 scTBL, decrease, 5 scTBL, decrease, 5 scTBL, decrease, 4 scTBL. In this way, we go from 32 initial stitches to 28 stitches, with which we will work from now on.
After the transition row, crochet a Center Single CCrochet row. This stitch is worked by making regular single crochet but inserting the hook into the inverted “V” of the stitch of the previous row, looking for the center of it.

On the next row, we will crochet our Boobles: chain 1, 1 CSC, MB (Make Bobble), 5 CSC, MB, 5 CSC, MB, 5 CSC, MB, 5 CSC, MB, 2 CSC.

Crochet 13 more rows alternating one row of Booble stitches every 3 normal rows of CSC and 1 popcorn every 5 stitches.

Decrease to shape the right neckline
Just as we did with the other front, we must shape the neckline of the front piece of Bobble stitch. To do so, you should decrease 1 stitch on each row when you reach this area until you end up with 20 stitches.
Increase for the second sleeve …
After obtaining 20 stitches, chain 28 stitches, turn your work and work 27 stitches ito the chain, 18 SCS, 1 decrease.
Crochet 8 more rows making a decrease on each row when you reach the neckline area, until you get 38 stitches. Remember that, at all times, you will have to alternate scTBL in the area of the sleeve with the CSC and the Bobbles where they correspond. Crochet this way until you end up with 38 stitches.
Crochet these 38 stitches for 5 more rows.
3. Join the two fronts of the crochet baby kimono by the neck
Once these 5 rows without decreases are completed, chain 10 stitches. This chain will be in the neck area and will serve as a union between our two front pieces.
Pick up the front piece that you had reserved and place it under the front piece of Booble stitches. After the chain, continue crocheting 38 stitches belonging to the sleeve of the first front.
4. Crochet the back of the sleeves
From this moment, we will crochet our Baby Crochet Kimono in one piece.
Crochet 86 stitches for 13 rows.
5. Crochet Kimono’s back
We will finish the crochet part of this baby jacket by crocheting the back.
Crochet 59 scTBL, turn your work and crochet 32 scTBL. In this way, we will work only with the 32 central stitches.
Crochet 24 more rows and cut the strand. Keep in mind that this strand will be used to sew one of the sides and one sleeve, so leave it long enough.
6. Last details and IT’S DONE!
With the remaining strand, sew the side of the baby crochet jacket and the bottom of the right sleeve
Take a new strand and repeat the same operation with the other side and under the left sleeve.
Work a Slip Stitch ending. Start at the corner of the left, go through the neck area and continue with the bobble stitch front. In this way, you will have a much more polished and uniform edge.

I am planning to crochet this kimono soon. I have a yarn that’s indicated for 4mm needles. I was just wondering whether the tension sample should be crocheted with a 4mm hook or with a 5mm hook as used in the pattern?
Hi Alicia! Two yarns recommended for 4mm needles can vary greatly in thickness. Each manufacturer suggests a needle size based on their preference, and there isn’t a universal standard. The best way to find an alternative yarn is to look for one with a similar composition and yardage to the recommended yarn. You should look for a Worsted/Aran weight yarn, meaning a 50g skein should have about 100 meters. If you use a finer yarn and hook, the final garment will be much smaller.

When making the transition row on the front piece the pattern says to make single crochets in the back row only, alternating with decreases. Are we supposed to make normal decreases or decrease in the back row only?
I fell in love with your instructions for doing this kimono.. Sooo I went ahead and using your basic instructions, as well as a schematic of an adult kimono, I did a Template for an adult. Now, i used a G hook (US) and #5WW yarn and the result would fit a 12-14 year old. No problems it was only a template. Then, I decided to step my game up and turn the pattern template into knitting. So far I have the first front piece with sleeve partially done. But it’s thanks to YOU that I started this project. Thank you

I’m not an advanced crocheted but I’ve got to row 50 on the 3-6 month size and I have completed row 50 turned the page to do the back and it tells me to chain 13 stitches then below row 50 appears again please advise

You are at the point where you need to join the left front side and the bobbles front piece to start working on the back. Once you have completed row 50 of the bobbles piece, chain 13 stitches and then continue working across the stitches of the left front side. You restart the row count from row 50 because the left front side was only worked up to row 49.

I purchased the new born, lovely pattern ,but my finished measurements are a lot less than 20cm ,I am on the inside front , I am using a 5 hook and medium weighted yarn , it’s like I’m 3 cm out on my gauge , which seems way out , can you suggest anything , also what would the sleeves be, that would give me an idea of how much I am out on gauge

Hello!! I made the first half of this with ease but I am REALLY struggling with the CSC stitch. Can I do this with regular single crochet and it still come out correctly??
Hi Megan! Since the single crochet (sc) and the extended single crochet (esc) have the same width and height, you can substitute one for the other without any issues and achieve a similar result. The key to successfully working the CSC is to crochet very loosely. You may find it helpful to use a larger-sized crochet hook for this part of the pattern.😉
