Hi! I did not want to let more time go by without publishing the tutorial of these Knitted Baby Booties that match the Baby Knitted Onesie.
Probably, if you have never knitted baby booties you will think that it must be complicated being so tiny and with so many curves and shapes, but that’s not true! They are very simple to knit, you will only need to know how to cast on and bind off stitches, knit garter stitch and make decreases.
In 1 hour you will have both finished and you will be so impressed of what you have made that you’ll want to knit more and more!
Materials to make a pair of Knitted Baby Booties
The needed materials to make our Easy knitted booties are:
- 1 ball of 50 grams of yarn for 4mm needles. As I used in the post of Knitted Baby Onesie, to make the booties match, I used the same yarn, the color is 15-light greyish green-of Drops Merino Extra Fine Uní Colour.
- 4 mm needles
- 2 wood buttons
- Tapestry needle
How to knit a pair of Knitted Baby Booties
1. Knit the ankle section of the baby knitted booties
First, we must cast on 27 (30, 32) stitches and knit 16 rows in garter stitch, this will make up the ankle part of our wool booties. Keep in mind that at this point, the length can be varied to your liking, if you prefer that the bootie fits higher at the foot or that it is wider you can knit more rows.
2. Knit the toecap section of the knitted booties
From this point, we will begin to knit the toecap of the handmade baby booties working with the 7 middle stitches in the smallest size and with 8 middle stitches in the two larger sizes. Once we have knitted 17 (19, 20) stitches to access the middle section of the work, we will have to knit 12 (14, 16) rows only using these middle stitches. This will be the upper area of the toecap.
As you can see, if you have been knitting by slipping the first stitch of each row, in each side of this middle section, which we have just knitted, “little bumps” have been formed by which we should insert the needle and pick up 7 (8,9) stitches.
Now we must pick up the 7 (8,9) stitches from the other side of the toe…
To finish the toecap section of our knitted booties, we must knit all the 41 (46, 50) stitches for 6 rows, this will be what gives the height to the toe of the bootie.
At this point we see that it is already taking some form and you can already differentiate the toecap perfectly. This is when we begin to really motivate ourselves!
3. Knit the sole of the Knitted Baby Booties
To continue, we must return to the middle section of the work to work again only with the middle 7 (8,8) stitches in short rows, for this, we knit 24 (27, 29) stitches and turn the work, such and how we would do when finishing a row.
We knit 6 (7, 7) stitches so that we only have one stitch left to knit, which we will knit together will the stitch next to it in the left. This way we will be able to close the sides.
In this way, we will continue to knit 6 (7, 7), 2 stitches together and turning the work.
It will be very easy to distinguish when you must knit two stitches together, since there will be a small separation between stitches, these are the two stitches that are slightly separated which you should knit together to decrease the work and go on forming the sole of the knitted booties.
If you want to give a bit of rounded shape to the heel part in the sole, we will have to decrease two stitches. When we have 15 (18,18) stitches left, we must knit 3 stitches, knit two stitches together (decrease), knit 2 stitches and knit 2 stitches together. In this way, instead of continuing to work with the 7 (8,8) middle stitches, now we will have 5 (6,6,).
When only 9 (12,12) stitches remain on the needle, it will be time to bind off all of them.
To make this seam without a notice you will find very helpful the little bumps that have formed thanks to slipping the first stitch. You should start seaming by passing the tapestry needle through a little bump on one side and the other side alternately until you have both parts completely joined. You will see that you hardly notice that there is a seam!
To finish, we turn our booties, roll the top and sew on a decorative button and they are ready! You can see how easy it is to knit these baby booties!
As you can see this is a very simple and basic pattern that lends itself to all the modifications that you want. You can put a band to tie it to the ankle, make the top longer by knitting a few more rows, put a decorative eight on the toecap, mix stockinette with garter stitch and everything you can think of to make them match your knitting projects.
I recommend that if you have some yarn and needles by hand, try to make these knitted baby booties even if you have only knitted scarves and cowls, they are made in no time and I am convinced that you will be surprised with the result!.
