Knitted Baby Shoes – Ballerinas Easy Pattern & Tutorial

Although there’s nothing prettier than cute baby feet out in the air, when summer’s coming to an end, we must cover them up and give them some shelter whether we want to or not! That’s why today I propose to knit a pair of Ballerina Knitted Baby Shoes for our little ones.

They’re a really easy knitted baby shoes, and particularly easy to wear since they allow the baby to freely move and most importantly, their feet will fit naturally and won’t feel tight in any moment. They‘ll grow along with your baby!

Materials to make knitted baby shoes with Straight Needles

The materials we’ll need to knit our knitted shoes for baby are the following:

• Wool or cotton yarn for 4mm. needles.To have an idea of how much you’ll need, I used the remaining I got left after knitting this knitted baby romper. Three 50 grams cotton balls was enough for me to knit this baby romper and the knitted baby booties (and I even got some yarn left to make a teether…). The yarn I used in both tutorials was the  Cotton Merino from Drops – Mustard Yellow (15).
• 4mm Straight needles (6 U.S.)
• Tapestry needle

How to make knitted baby shoes step by step  – 3-6 months size- 

1. Knit the ankle section of the mary jane knitted baby shoes

We start by casting on 38 stitches.

Then we’ll keep knitting only the 8 central stitches to shape the toecap of the DIY baby shoes.

For that,  knit 23 stitches and turn the work. Don’t worry about the 15 remaining stitches you still have on the other needle, we’ll get back to them later. 

 

To continue, we will keep on knitting 8 stitches and turning the work until we have completed 8 rows. It’s very important to slip the first stitch without knitting, that way you’ll see that 4 “little bumps” have been formed on the edge of the work.

 

Once you see your 4 “little bumps” formed, you should insert the left needle through each one of them. That way, you’ll have increased 4 more stitches in the needle in which you previously had 15, making it a total of 19 stitches on the left needle.

 

Knit the row normally, so you have all the stitches on one needle.

Turn your work and knit until you find the “step”. You should repeat the same action we had previously done, insert the needle through the four “little bumps” (this way you’ll have increased 4 more stitches) and knit normally until you have all the stitches on one needle.

2. Knit the toecap section of the knitted baby shoes

 

To continue, we must knit 6 more rows and you’ll see how we’ll start shaping the toecap section of our easy knitted baby shoes.

3. Knit the sole of the baby shoes

 

At this point we still have to keep working on the 8 central stitches to shape the sole of the knit shoes. To do that, we’ll knit 27 stitches and then turn your work.

 

The sequence to knit the sole will be the following, knit 7 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, turn your work, knit 7 stitches, knit 2 stitches together and so on. We’ll follow that sequence until we have 14 stitches left.

Now is the moment to knit the remaining stitches on the left needle to have all of them in one needle and proceed to bind them off.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail so you can use it to seam the heel section, finally closing up the baby booties.

4. Knit the laces 

We just have to make the laces to tie the shoes up to the ankle and make sure they are perfectly kept in place.

We must cast on 20 stitches on a needle, and then knit up 10 stitches on the heel area.

You can knit up these stitches the easiest way that works for you, I do it with the same knitting needle, but it might be simpler for you to do it with a crochet hook. Basically, all you have to do is to insert the hook under the “bread” that has been formed on every stitch, pass the yarn through and take it out.

Once you have knitted up these 10 stitches, cast on another 20 stitches on the needle.

 

We’ll work on these 50 stitches for two rows, and then bind off all of them on the third row. After this we’ll have finished our knitted baby shoes. Yeah, it was that easy!

As I mentioned above, these cute knitted baby shoes are made for a 3-6 months size, but if they are tied up to the ankle, they’ll be able to wear them earlier and they won’t fall off. They’ll also be able to wear them after the 6 months, since they’re knitted and they will perfectly adapt to your baby’s feet and won’t feel tight at all.
