Today we are going to learn how to knit this adorable Knitted Baby Hat from the beginning, that is, doing all the calculations to make it easier for you to adapt it to the size you need since they are very simple steps.
How to make a Knitted Baby Hat with Pom pom
Materials for knitting a Baby Hat
For this project we will only need:
- 50 gr. of yarn for 5 mm needles. I have used Lanas Katia Planet range in color 3999, a lovely baby pink, as you can see.
- 5 mm. Straight knitting needles (8 USA)
- Tapestry needle, a meter, a balloon and a pair of scissors
How to knit a baby hat with straight needles – Step by step tutorial-
1. Select the desired size for your Knitted Baby Hat
First, we must measure the contour of the head of the baby to which the hood is intended in order too get our knitted baby hat measurements. This is the most reliable method, but if it is for a gift, the baby has not yet been born or you do not have the option to take these measures, in the following table you can find the approximate measurements of the cranial perimeter of the baby according to their age.
Once you have decided the size of your baby hat bonnet, you must inflate a balloon with that same size. In my case, I want to make it so that I can use it for size 0-3 months, so I have decided that the circumference will be 37 cm. As you can see on the table above , the measurement for a newborn is 35 cm and the 3 months 40 cm. so I have chosen a measure that is between both numbers.
We must also measure the face contour, taking into account that we must leave a margin for the hollow of the neck and 4 centimeters for the hem we will add later to pass the tape. Considering this, we will use a length of 25 cm.
2. Knit a tension sample
With the wool that we are going to use and the needles that we want, we must make a tension sample, to know how many stitches you need to cast on to get a 10 cm. block of knitting. In my case, I must cast on 16 stitches. Therefore, if I need to get 25 cm. of fabric, I will need to cast on 40 stitches. To get to this number I used a simple rule of three, if you need 16 stitches to get 10 cm., then, to get 25 cm. you will need to cast on X: 16×25 / 10 = 40 stitches.
3. Knit the base of the Baby Cap
In the case of the Knitted Baby Hat for the size that I have selected, 0-3 months, we will have to knit 36 rows. If you have decided to make the baby cap bigger or with a different wool and needles, you should go checking with your head shaped balloon, until it covers the part you need.
Once we have the right width for our project, it’s time to start decreasing. We must bind off 4 stitches at the beginning of each round until we run out of stitches.
We only have to fold our diy baby hat in half and seam the two parts with a tapestry needle. It’s already taking shape!
4. Knit the bodkin or hem of our Knitted Baby Hat
To be able to pass the cord or ribbon that will later make the pixie hat fit to the neck, we will have to make a hem. For this, we will knit up as many stitches as we need. In this case (size 0-3) will be 36 stitches. You will know how many stitches your project requires exactly since you will have to insert the needle for each one of the “little bumps” that have been forming on the edge of the work.
Once the stitches for the hem have been knitted up, we will knit in the following way:
Row 1: knit all the stitches
Row 2: purl all the stitches
Row 3-6: knit all the stitches
Row 7: purl all the stitches
Row 8: knit all the stitches
Row 9: Bind off
As you can see, you will have formed a “little ridge” in the central area that will tell you where to bend the work to make the bodkin.
5. Knit and put the cord or ribbon
The next step will be to knit a cord with the method that we like the most. At other times (like in the Pixie hat that I published a few weeks ago or in this Popcorn stitch shorts) I made an i-cord following this tutorial. However, this time I have chosen to knit it with my hands. If you want to learn how to knit this finger cord you can do it by following this other video.
The length will depend on the size of your Garter Stitch Knitted Baby Hat and your personal taste, but 75 cm.- 100 cm will be enough for all sizes. Remember that you will always be in time to cut it a little bit if once it is finished it seems too long.
You should make a fold in the area of the “ridge”, which I described above, and seam it leaving inside the cord.
6. Make the Pop Poms and join them to our Baby Wool hat
Finally, make three Pom Poms and sew them to your baby hat with pom pom, one at each end of the cord and the third (which can be somewhat larger in size) to the top of the baby knitted hat.
As you can see, this type of Baby Hat can be knitted in many different stitches and set perfectly with a diaper cover, a pair of baby booties or a nice baby onesie or baby romper.
I made it as part of the set “Musgo Baby” but it also goes great with this other diaper cover.
As always, I encourage you to do it, it is a very easy Baby Hat knitting pattern on straight needles, you will finish it very fast and the result is precious. It is the ideal complement to any look and a assured triumph as part of a special gift for a newborn baby. Have you already thought about the color of your Pixie baby hat?

Hi there. Love this garter stitch pixie hat. Quick question: when you say “knit up” along the edge of the work do you mean to pick up stitches?
Hi! just wanted to know what is the length in cm to achieve the 36 rows for the base of the hat! I’m wondering how did you get to that number, because if I knit 36 rows with a different yarn, it will be a different length. I am guessing between 12 and 14 cm but I’m not sure! can you please help me out?
